Teacher Handbook

A guide prepared for classroom teachers who will deliver the ESG-AG module.

Teachers deliver the ESG-AG module with their students using tablets and the Teacher Handbook. The handbook is the first teacher handbook prepared on educational health and safety in Turkey.

Contents of the handbook

  • Aims and learning outcomes of the ESG-AG module
  • Introduction to the context-based REACT strategy and its stages
  • Implementation instructions and points to consider
  • ESG lesson plans (topic, duration, learning outcomes, methods and techniques, materials)
  • The AR markers used in the activities — in a form that can be cut out and used

Use

The handbook indicates which marker is used at which stage of each activity. Enough markers are provided for every activity; in some activities, materials such as the cubes used in the relating stage can also be cut out and assembled.

Example

Sample lesson plan: fire hazards and precautions at school

SubjectEducational Health and Safety
Grade3–4
Duration2 lesson hours (40 min. + 40 min.)
Competence areaFire hazards and precautions at school
MaterialsAugmented reality application, tablet, cubes, AR markers
Methods and techniquesREACT strategy, direct instruction, cooperative learning

Learning outcomes

  1. Knows fire and fire-related concepts.
  2. Recognises the causes of fire.
  3. Understands the risks associated with fire.
  4. Knows the ways of protection from fire.
  5. Applies the response actions required in the event of a fire.

Teaching and learning process

R

Relating

Cubes showing a flame, an oxygen molecule and wood/paper are scanned with the AR application; students realise that these three components must come together for a fire to start.

E

Experiencing

Fire types and response methods are introduced. Markers symbolising the fire extinguisher, hose, emergency exit and fire alarm are handed out, and students search for the markers hidden around the school.

A

Applying

Scanning the marker placed on the electrical panel starts a fire simulation. The student first switches off the fuses, then selects the correct extinguishing method; the consequence of a wrong choice is also visualised.

C

Cooperating

Groups play a fire-themed quiz, a visual matching game and a “spot the mistake” game; the deliberate mistakes in the scenario (blocked fire exit, misplaced extinguisher, etc.) are found together.

T

Transferring

House fires are discussed; scenarios such as calling the emergency number, not using the lift and moving low under smoke are experienced with AR, transferring what has been learned to new situations.

The handbook has not been published yet

The Teacher Handbook will be available for download on this page as open access once the development and pilot implementation processes are complete. The information on this page will be updated during the project.
